Boussole
Lalie Thébault Maviel

Lalie Thébault Maviel became interested in representations of the compass, an instrument that uses the Earth’s magnetic field to help us orient ourselves in the landscape. These educational photographs, which were collected in various works for children or adults, have been cropped, though sometimes with their original context still visible; through this work of selection, a poetics of lines, tools and gestures is revealed. The images show how to distinguish between magnetic North and geographic North, how to orient oneself by the sun, the moon or one’s watch, how to use a sundial, and how to observe the elements in the nature that surrounds us.

The exhibition is accompanied by a small-format booklet consisting of a set of images and texts that encourage viewers to learn, observe, orient themselves, and explore their environment in a newly independent way.
