Julius Schien
Since the reunification of Germany in 1990, more than 200 people have died as a result of far-right violence in the country. At a time when we are seeing a rise of extremism in Germany and around the world, Julius Schien is committed to shining a light on the crimes of the far right that have marked the identity of contemporary Germany. Using a large-format camera and working from archival documents relating to acts of murderous violence, Schien creates a visual catalogue of crime scenes in order to tell the stories of the victims and to map them. The gentleness of the images that he has created of deserted places and landscapes, their strange beauty and their banality invite the viewer to immerse themselves in a sombre reality. Here presented publicly for the first time, his work brings archives back to life, creating a collective memory and enabling these acts of tragic violence to escape from oblivion. This exhibition presents a portion of his ongoing investigation, the goal of which is to depict every crime scene since 1990.
