Jasper
Matthew Genitempo

Inspired by the American poet Frank Standford, Matthew Genitempo photographed wilderness areas and the hermits who have chosen to live in the depths of the woods of the Ozark Mountains on the border between Arkansas and Missouri. Entering into their makeshift dwellings, Genitempo shared in the daily lives of these people, who have in common a need for solitude. For months he immersed himself in their physical and mental universe and gradually got to know them.

The mysterious images that make up the Jasper series explore survivalist movements and the fascination with escape. Straddling the divide between reality and fiction, his black-and-white shots of bodies, faces and landscapes emphasize the power of ambiguity in this environment. In his work with images he approaches the medium of photography as a way of revealing what goes on in people’s innermost selves.
