Bombenkrater
Henning Rogge

For the German artist Henning Rogge, taking pictures of the craters left by bombs is a way of confronting the recent history of his country. In the spirit of Romantic painting, his images depict forest landscapes in which the round shapes of impact craters appear at low angles, often filled with water.

These locations are not associated with any particular event of the Second World War, and seem suspended between memory and forgetting. These images express the ambiguity of a landscape marked by the violence of destruction, but also endowed with vitality; for these holes left by bombs have often become a refuge for species threatened with extinction.
