OS CRIAS
Inès Mermoud

In this debut exhibition, Inès Mermoud subtly and gently sheds light on the complex daily life of children living in the violent environment of some of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her installation includes multiple stories and images of various kinds that have been gathered on location. Her colour portraits of children, created in an environment familiar to Mermoud, are constructed and silent.

They are framed so as to be in dialogue with large-format prints of images drawn from Brazilian TV news broadcasts. With the different perspectives that have been carefully assembled, she calls into question the representation of violence that has been normalized, a questioning that is reinforced by the paradoxical tenderness that emanates from the installation. The word cria in the title of the work, which comes from the same root as the Portuguese word for “child,” is also used to refer to the inhabitants of the favelas.
