Vers la rive

Inspired by literature, as well as the reflections of philosopher Judith Butler on vulnerability as a basis for resistance, Rebecca Bowring seeks to capture the moments when our weaknesses nourish our strength and when everyday life becomes an act of courage. To create Vers la rive, Bowring worked in close collaboration with six women aged 75 to 96 living at the Residenz au Lac, a medical-social facility in Biel/Bienne.

As both actors and spectators in this collaborative work, they took up daily photography and writing – modes of expression that are both durable and fragile, and lie at the intersection of individual and collective memory. Presented in two parts, at Photoforum Pasquart and at the Residenz du Lac, Bowring’s installation invites viewers to let their gaze wander over fragments of visual and textual records that have been delicately assembled, sometimes juxtaposed or superimposed to create multiple layers of reading. Lying between documentary and fiction, this work emphasizes the power of the image. It is the outcome of profound encounters with human reality in the simplicity of a shared everyday life: a work that invites us to listen, understand, share in and celebrate the ephemeral beauty of every moment.
