Sandra Mehl met Ilona and Maddelena in a working-class district of Montpellier in 2015. Aged 12 and 11, they live in the small apartment they share with their parents, Maddelena’s godfather, five dogs, four cats and a multitude of objects depicting American Indians and Johnny Hallyday. The photographer followed them closely for two years, to capture those moments when they transcend their daily life during their adolescence, a time of self-construction.
