Photographing Virtual Spaces
Alan Butler, Roc Herms, Simone Niquille

Computer screens play an increasingly important role in our lives today. Social interactions now are mostly conducted on social networking platforms: we chat with our families on Whatsapp, we look for love on Tinder, and we find friends through online games. Photo-realistic avatars, complex algorithms and other such phenomena are at the root of the radical transformation taking place in the contemporary practice of photography. How do photographers define themselves in these virtual spaces?

Simone Niquille, Roc Herms and Alan Butler will lead three concurrent day-long workshops that will be open to professionals in the field of photography. Under the guidance of these three artists, participants will use photography to explore the virtual world and to examine the notions of representation and identity.

The results of the workshops will then be exhibited during the festival. Photographing Virtual Spaces is organized in cooperation with the SITUATIONS programme of the Fotomuseum Winterthur. The workshop will also be shown on the website of the Fotomuseum Winterthur under the heading SITUATIONS/Follower.
