De Eerste Maandag Van de Maand

Ever since the Cold War, every first Monday of the month (“eerste maandag van de maand”) an alarm sounds in the Netherlands for testing purposes. A sound that is supposed to warn us for approaching danger, takes over the environment for 1 minute and 26 seconds. In 2020 the siren will ring for the last time. Thomas Kuijpers started filming the sound and its environment in 2014, and noticed the act of recording these moments gives quite an absurdist look at the connection between this sound and the environment it manifests itself in.
