Das doppelte Lottchen

The Das doppelte Lottchen collective takes its name from the famous children’s book by Germanauthor Erich Kästner. It consists of two artists from Biel/Bienne who revisit, through the “47° 14′ 20″ N, 7° 2′ 48″ 0” series, different eras via significant works from the history of art. The series itselfis named after the geographic coordinates of the photographic location in the Jura. The twelve pictures in the series are created from the superposition of a famous work of art anda photograph, a process which allows the artists to construct a new fiction based on the wellknown image.

The painting by the School of Fontainebleau “Dame à sa toilette” (end of the sixteenth century)or even the “Virgin and Child (Melun diptych)” by Jean Fouquet (1450–1455) are made part of a new artistic process combining photography and painting. While the superposition of theseimages blurs certain elements and allows others to appear, the female subject remains the centre of focus. By collating subjects from earlier works and contemporary female subjects from photographs, the series brings different scenes – and more specifically different periods – together, encapsulating them in pale tones to create a misty, dreamlike atmosphere. Between photography andpainting, past and present, historical fiction and geographic reality, the series embarks on a voyage through time and art.
