The Bliss of Conformity
Yingguang Guo
For her project The Bliss of Conformity, Yingguang Guo went to a corner of People’s Park in Shanghai. There one can find all the mothers who come to put their single children up for sale. With the help of small posters like the ones used to advertise an apartment or a car for sale, they tout the merits of their offspring: age, height, salary, education, etc. In this video work, which begins by immersing us in the peaceful atmosphere of a park, Guo examines arranged marriages and the place of women in society, and raises questions about social belonging and discrimination.
