Seeing science
SNSF Scientific Image Competition

Patiently and inexorably, scientific research is constantly extending our knowledge, organizing it, and calling it into question. Behind this gigantic rational enterprise there lies an entire world that is little known to the general public. Scientific research has as many failures as successes; it harbours moments of beauty seized from chance; it is built on an endless series of patient and stubborn inquiries. Just as numerous are the stories told in images by the nearly 450 works submitted to the SNSF Scientific Image Competition organized by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography is presenting the prize-winning works selected by an international jury: photographs and videos that reveal the hidden face of science. (Daniel Saraga)

The exhibition Seeing science will be accompanied by a morning of discussions. On Saturday, May 18, from 9 am to 12:30 pm, the place of images in the scientific milieu will be put into perspective with Luce Lebart (Archive of Modern Conflict, London), Joël Vacheron (ECAL), Francesco Panese and Gianni Haver (University of Lausanne).

In cooperation with the Swiss National Science Foundation(SNSF).
