Untitled
Lisette Appeldorn

Lisette Appeldorn is obsessed with masks made from all sorts of materials. The portrait series Untitled is characterized formally by drapes, saturated colours and unusual poses of the models she photographs. Constructed for each picture, the series of figures created by Appeldorn with faces that are concealed, anonymous and without any visible emotion, elicit a feeling of unease in the viewer. In the photos, Appeldorn reduces the body to a sculpture or object, or to strange shapes. In the era of selfies and facial recognition technology, these images address the place of emotions in our society and the disappearance of the individual when immersed in a flood of data, and also the masks behind which human beings sometimes tend to hide themselves.
