Matthias Gabi
At the center of Matthias Gabi’s work are images that have an illustrative purpose. These can be advertisements, photojournalism or product photos, such as appear everywhere in our everyday lives, now often in digital form. Following his personal preferences, he selects, from various kinds of printed materials, individual pages which he finds interesting for both their content and their form, and which seem to him representative of each type of publication. He reproduces the selected pages by means of a complex process similar to the ones used in archives for the digitisation of cultural artefacts.
The photos are then produced in material form: the documents become images. For his exhibition in the Gewölbe Gallery, Gabi has collaborated with the gallery owner Martin Jegge to create a site-specific installation in which he has put his images into interaction with the furniture of the gallery. In this way he questions the relationship between images and reality.
