In 2016 the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography and the Bilingualism Forum are both celebrating their twentieth anniversaries. To mark the occasion, the American photographer Jon Naiman, a resident of Biel/Bienne, was commissioned to document one activity in particular of the Bilingualism Forum: the linguistic « Tandems ».
The Tandems bring together two people who want to improve their competence in the language of their partner through conversation, and thus to actively contribute to building their lives. The photographs bear witness to animated and lively discussions taking place in Biel/Bienne, the city of bilingualism. Often a central element of the composition metaphorically evokes a « language barrier », which the Tandems help to break down.
