Broken Sets: Bad Display

For PhotoforumPasquArt’s exhibit at this year’s Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography, Penelope Umbrico has developed a multidimensional installation made up of (among other things) photographs of broken LCD monitors. These images, which she found on eBay and Craigslist, are combined with other pictures (provided by the sellers themselves) that capture reflections of the camera flash. Umbrico uses images from barter and consumer websites, and the abundant material to be found on these sites constitutes her domain of research.

The collective image memory of the twenty-first century determines her mode of work, which moves between the individual and collective perception of an image and the image’s particular characteristics as determined by the technology used and the mode of production. (Nadine Wietlisbach)
