Bois des Frères
Delphine Schacher

Standing in contrast to the satellite community of Le Lignon of the city of Vernier in the canton of Geneva, the simple wooden houses originally built in the 1960s as lodging for the hundreds of Italian workers who came to work on the construction of Le Lignon serve as the backdrop for this photographic investigation by Delphine Schacher. The 10 m2 bedrooms have continued to house succeeding generations of seasonal workers, along with other tenants.

Portraits of the residents are interspersed with views of the interiors and exteriors of the houses, creating multiple perspectives that reveal the socioeconomic conditions of the residents. Migration, unemployment, and divorce redefine the boundaries of privacy and of a closeness that can produce both social tension and cohesion. (Catherine Kohler)

Three young Swiss photographers (Simone Haug, Annick Ramp, Delphine Schacher) have each been commissioned by the LIVES Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research and the Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography to create a work on the NCCR LIVES themes of “vulnerability and resilence”.
