In 2007, Sébastien Cuvelier received from his mother the diary of his uncle, who had gone to explore Iran in the 1970s before the Shah was deposed. Carried along by this piece of family history, Cuvelier himself went several times to Iran in order to construct his own representation of the country as it is now. His photographs, juxtaposed with extracts from his uncle’s diary, question the idea of heritage and the search for a change that is both personal and societal. They reveal the flaws that can emerge at the heart of a religious and totalitarian “paradise”.
