Entanglement
Catherine Leutenegger

The series of images presented by Catherine Leutenegger are the result of her stay as an artist in residence in the megalopolis of Chennai, India. There she photographed the second life of the canvas posters, placards and murals that are created and presented in public places: posters of celebrities like actors and politicians, of unknown people for their birthdays, memorials and publicity campaigns. These images can later be found at the seaside, being used to cover fishing equipment or vendors’ stalls, producing a visual chaos in which different worlds come together and intermingle. When reused for different purposes, the previously two-dimensional images turn into three-dimensional sculptural mounds, distorting the faces depicted on them. Gradually they get torn up, then fade and disappear, in a kind of metaphor for the fragility of the image and the individual in present-day society.
