The hidden face of science
SNSF Scientific Image Competition

Science is by no means a cold and disinterested activity. It is something done by real people, with passion and devotion, involving trial and error and happy accidents. The contemporary practice of scientific research is revealed in the 680 works that were submitted by scientists in Switzerland to the 2020 and 2021 editions of the SNSF Scientific Image Competition.

The Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography is exhibiting a selection of the works that were awarded prizes by the jury and those chosen by popular vote, along with an electronic music piece set to scientific images and videos, presented by Witold Langlois, founder and curator of METEO.

METEO SCIENCE PERFORMANCE

In partnership with Witold Langlois and the METEO label, a musician is invited each year to compose a musical set inspired by the images submitted to the contest. This year, the latest instalment in this interdisciplinary project joining the image with electronic music has been composed by Violeta West. Her audiovisual creation can be discovered among the festival’s exhibitions as part of an immersive installation, as well as the four previous sets created by Pulgasari, Sunareht, Fashion Italia and Aamourocean.
Violeta West also made the logo, as well as the portraits of the artists who have participated in the project since its launch.

In cooperation with the Swiss National Science Foundation(SNSF).
