The Day Before_Star System
Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil
The twelve separate images that make up the series The Day Before_Star System are views of the night sky, as reconstructed by computer, on the eve of deliberate military bombardments on civilian populations. Using maps of the sky in the format of the IGN (Institut national de l’information géographique, France), Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil echoes ancient oracular practice and other widespread “astrological” phenomena in endeavouring to produce images that bring together the construction of territory, the obsession with security, fate, media memory, and historical reality.
The title of each work indicates the location, the year, the day, and the last minute before the date that entered into history.
All these images imply war without ever showing it.
