Dis-moi ce que tu manges
Katherine Longly

In a society in which individuals are constantly confronted with their own appearance, the act of eating is simultaneously a source of pleasure and a way of connecting with others. On the other side, it is also a way to soothe one’s emotions and a powerful tool of mastery over one’s own body. As part of a week-long immersive workshop with a class of students at the French Gymnasium of Biel/Bienne, Katherine Longly proposed to the students that they tackle these issues about the body and food, from their own perspective as a generation gripped by questions that are specific to their current stage of life but also to the era in which they are growing up. Generation Z grew up with social networks, Instagrammable food, influencers and sponsored content, and unabashed cosmetic surgery. It is also a generation that is conscious of the artificiality of images and has started movements of reappropriation like body positivity.

How does the personal relationship of adolescents with food get constructed? How do they experience the rules imposed on their bodies and how do they deconstruct them? What are their strategies of resistance? The artist gathered the students’ accounts and led them in a series of investigations and explorations into these questions so that they could reappropriate their own self-image.

In collaboration with the Gymnase français de Bienne.
