For “New Artificiality”, Catherine Leutenegger visited a Chinese construction company that makes buildings using gigantic 3D printers. Will these fabrications, using layer after layer of cement, created in record time and at a record-low cost, come to dominate as a new construction method, marking the end of standardization? 3D printing here represents an unprecedented fusion of architecture and representation, and is changing our experience of reality.
Tailored to the size of the exhibition venue, Leutenegger’s large-scale photographs produce confusion in our understanding of the new coordinates of a three-dimensional image that can be inhabited.
