Religious Aerobics
Bouillon Group
The filmed performance “Religious Aerobics” is a response to the rise of religious fundamentalism in Georgia since the fall of the Soviet regime. Disguised as an aerobics class, Bouillon Group go to a public space and perform the ritual motions of the three main religions in Georgia (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam). The performance calls into question the meaning of these gestures, which were originally of spiritual significance but now are done automatically, like an exercise routine.
