Je vivrai pour toi, part II
Calypso Mahieu

In the digital era, those who have passed away remain omnipresent in our day-to-day life due to their digital footprint, altering our relationship to mourning and remembrance. The rituals surrounding the death of a loved one used to be carried out within a close circle, but have now expanded to social networks. Je vivrai pour toi puts in the form of images the growing phenomenon we are all facing:  virtual eternity. Calypso Mahieu explores ghost profiles that continue to be tagged, poked and notified in the online world. Like digital mausoleums, the accounts of deceased people become spaces for gathering and for communicating with the other world, with people sharing memories, images and sorrows.

For the second stage of this project (the first was presented as part of the festival in 2018) Mahieu has adopted the imagery of mourning and spirituality, such as floral compositions and the use of candles and incense, in order to reproduce virtual altars in hybrid form. These new greeting spaces are rendered physical in a series of still-life images that are printed and exhibited in large format, and are now opened up and freed of their spatial and temporal limits.
