Journées photographiques de Bienne, 3.–26.5.2024

Place(s)
Pascal Greco

In March 2020, because of pandemic restrictions, Pascal Greco had to cancel a planned trip to Iceland to continue a photographic project. Confined to his own home, he began to make daily explorations of the digital landscapes in the Death Stranding game on his Playstation 4. During the hours he spent playing in this digital environment, he gradually realized that the virtual landscapes of the game bore an astonishing resemblance to the landscapes of Iceland that he had planned to photograph. He began to zoom in on the screen, studying the details of the constructed environments, and created shots within the game using its photo mode, both in close-ups and in wide shots.

The series Place(s), presented as an installation, explores the practice of “in-game photography” as a form of “post-photography.” His disturbingly realistic images focus on “natural” and “existing” landscapes, and question how we perceive and construct reality in the digital age. New images were produced for the festival, as the artist returned to “Iceland” with a more powerful camera, the Playstation 5. He then used an artificial intelligence program to enable large format prints.
