Permanent Concern
Bertrand Cavalier

Through the medium of photography, Bertrand Cavalier explores the interactions between people and the modern urban environments in which they live and grow. He created Permanent Concern, the series of images he is presenting, using a smartphone during his walks through various towns in the Netherlands. The subjects of his images are brick, concrete, plastic, traces, motifs and fragments of urban architecture. The things on which his gaze falls might seem banal, yet they reveal the individual and social practices that can be seen every day in public spaces.

By sometimes zooming to the maximum, by framing his subjects in ways that creates a sense of being off balance, and by playing with the repetition of certain themes and subjects, Cavalier evokes in the viewer a feeling of déjà vu. As well, the depiction of three-dimensional space on the two-dimensional surface of an image questions the connections of human beings with their environment and representations of it. Printed in monochrome with a laser printer, his installation creates a poetic dialogue between light and shadow, between object and emptiness, between absence and presence, between past and present.
